Sudden Darkness Befalls Sao Paulo, Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO – In the height of daytime on Monday, the sky suddenly blackened, and day became night in Sao Paulo.

Sure, smog is bad in the Western Hemisphere’s largest city, where traffic jams can stretch for dozens of miles. But not this bad. What was going on? Was the end near?

“Apocalypse!” one person cried on Twitter.

“The final judgment is coming!” another added.

“Mordor,” one more person intoned.

Experts tried to puzzle it out, but their conclusions at times appeared to be conflicting, deepening the mystery. The National Institute of Meteorology said the city, which sits at an elevation of 2,500 feet, was “inside a cloud.” Others explained that it was a cold front. Metsul, a Brazilian meteorology company, said the culprit was smoke that had come in from forest fires in Bolivia, Paraguay and remote parts of Brazil.

Kansas And Oklahoma Rattled By More Than 65 Earthquakes In The Last 7 Days

A county in central Kansas experienced a pretty shocking uptick in seismic activity last week — 11 earthquakes in five days.

It started with a magnitude-2.4 earthquake Wednesday morning just 2 1/2 miles southwest of Hutchinson, Kansas, in Reno County, according to the United States Geological Survey.

There would be 10 more before the week was out.

The biggest one of the group hit on Friday morning.  It was originally reported to be a magnitude 4.2 quake, but it was later downgraded to magnitude 4.1.

Due to the geology of the region, earthquakes in the middle of the country are often felt more acutely, and this particular earthquake was powerful enough to shake things off the shelves of people’s homes…

11,000 Birds Fall Dead From Sky In Montana

More than 11,000 waterfowl and wetland birds have fallen dead from the sky following a dramatic hailstorm that wreaked havoc through the state of Montana earlier this week.

As Montanans tend to flattened crops and broken windows damaged by the baseball-sized hail in the area, wildlife biologists working in the eastern part of the state collect “dead ducks and shorebirds with broken wings, smashed skulls, internal damage, and other injuries consistent with massive blunt-force trauma,” according to Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.

Images posted by the agency show the shoreline along Big Lake Wildlife Management Area littered with a variety of bird species, while wildlife officials report thousands of additionally injured waterfowl and wetland birds in and around the lake. Nearly one-third of the birds were likely killed or injured during the late summer storm, which had winds reaching up to 112 kilometers per hour (70 miles per hour)…

Dr David Wood exclusively told Daily Star Online that he believes we could “remain youthful indefinitely” — but with the option to refuse on grounds of religion.

The technology expert and co-founder of Transhumanist Party UK said he doesn’t believe in God and claimed “evolution did a mixed job”.

Rat/Human Hybrids Planned By Scientists In Japan

Boffins plan to grow rat-human and mouse-human embryos in Japan.

The Japanese Research group has received approval from the government to insert human cells into animal embryos.

After being inserted into the animals, the cells may then grow into organs.

Ronald Parchem, an assistant professor of neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said: “I personally thought it was very exciting.

“It has tremendous potential to help many people who are suffering from a broad variety of diseases or in need of different types of tissue or organ replacement.”

Japan made headlines when it allowed growing human cells in animal embryos.

This has allowed a number of experiments to take place, with researchers even planning a human-monkey hybrid.

You Shall Be As gods: Scientists Create Human/Monkey Hybrid In China

Scientists have successfully formed a hybrid human-monkey embryo – with the experiment taking place in China to avoid “legal issues”.

Researchers led by scientist Juan Carlos Izpisúa spliced together the genes to grow a monkey with human cells.

It is said the creature could have grown and been born, but scientists aborted the process.

The team, made up of members of the Salk Institute in the United States and the Murcia Catholic University, genetically modified the monkey embryos.

Researchers deactivates the genes which form organs, and replaced them with human stem cells.

Project collaborator Estrella Núñez hailed the experiment as “very promising”.

The team have not yet published their findings, but confirmed the hybrid to EL PAIS.

“We are now trying not only to move forward and continue experimenting with human cells and rodent and pig cells, but also with non-human primates,”  Izpisúa said.
